Overall Job Objective

General Overview of Position

Seen as leaders and experts in the organization, librarians provide quality readers' advisory, reference services, collection development and programming within a multi-location environment.  KPL Librarians continuously innovate and launch services, programs and initiatives, and evaluate their efficacy in the community to best meet the needs and aspirations in the community. The Adult Programming Librarian will engage patrons with thoughtful, creative and useful programs that are desired by the community, including, but not limited to digital, civic, health, information, and financial literacies.

The Adult Programming Librarian position is a full-time exempt position. Candidates must have an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution to be considered for this position.  The ideal candidate will have professional library experience in a public library setting and previous experience creating, scheduling, and executing public programs for the community. 


 

Example of Duties & Responsibilities

Programming Creator of Learning and Culture - Encourages self-directed continuous learning and connecting people through cultural activities. Provides patrons with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex information society.  Competencies needed include the ability to teach and understand different learning styles, to animate and shine light on our wide array of services in fun and creative ways, the intellectual curiosity to continue learning cutting edge technology, and to continuously evaluate programming in order to provide a better experience for the patron. 

  • Develop and implement facilitated programs and self-directed learning experiences with an emphasis on digital, civic, health, information, and financial literacies at each KPL location and out in the community in coordination with Outreach Services.
  • Collaborate with Department Heads, Branch Managers and other KPL staff to assist with the creation, scheduling and implementation of programs and classes.

  • Lead the Adult Programming Team to meet the expectations and deadlines of each programming cycle.

  • Coordinate collaborative programs  presented by patrons or other community members with skills and knowledge to share.

  • Offer self-directed learning experiences by providing instruction through print and online  tutorials.

  • Plan events both inside and outside the building.

  • Negotiate presenter contracts and manage public performance rights. 

  • Work with the communications department to develop marketing for programs. 

  • Ability to use and incorporate technology into  programming.

  • Create engaging environments that promote lifelong learning and support.

  • Understand how space can impact a person's experience positively.

  • Evaluate program outcomes and impact in the community.

  • Explore grant opportunities; write applications and manage grant projects.

Information Professional - provides service at the point of need.  Competencies needed include in-depth research skills, value-added presentation, information evaluation, reader's advisory, subject expertise.

  • Interview patrons to determine the scope of information needs, and recommend appropriate resources to answer their needs.

  • Provide technologically adept basic support and use of personal devices and A/V equipment.

  • Maintain knowledge of current library trends and participate in appropriate conferences, workshops, and seminars to develop professional and leadership skills.

Service Leader - model service excellence and lead projects. Competencies needed include emotional intelligence, project management knowledge, coaching and mentoring co-workers, in-charge skills, accountability and entrepreneurship.

  • Act as a model of ideal customer service, based on the KPL Customer Service Philosophy, and coaches co-workers to bridge gaps in service.

  • Serve as Project Manager or Champion on department, building, or library wide initiatives under the direction of the Department Head or Customer Experience Manager.

  • Develop & implement strategies to create a welcoming environment for different user groups.

  • Market library services and programs at points of service and through established relationships with users.

  • Anticipate potential needs of users & community and innovate services to address those needs.

  • Respond to patron inquiries about library services, including the interpretation of library policies and procedures.

Collections Curator - builds, maintains, and makes accessible materials needed and desired by the community.  Competencies needed include collection analysis, assessment and evaluation, creating and interpreting metadata, merchandising materials both visually on site and working with the Communication Department to merchandise virtually.

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of assigned selection areas, provide support to other staff on those collections. 

  • Identify ways to improve patron access to those collections through a variety of methods such as displays, book lists, cataloging, and modifying library spaces.

  • Assess trends in circulation for assigned selection areas. 

  • Evaluate and curate assigned selection areas to ensure collection reflects diversity, relevancy, currency, and community interest. 

Community Activator - Works with Branch Managers to respond to unique neighborhood needs. Competencies needed include the ability to network, facilitate, partner both within the City and with local agencies, organizations and institutions, the ability to speak professionally in order to present content to our community.  

  • Contribute to community-wide initiatives.

  • Offer partners library services.

  • Build relationships to better understand the needs of the community.

  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with external community organizations and cross-departmentally within KPL.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required 

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science.

  • Professional librarian experience preferred.

  • Experience planning and executing programs preferred.

  • Knowledge of Library planning and policy development preferred.

Physical and Working Conditions

SELECTION GUIDELINES

Appointment to the position will be in accordance with Kenosha Public Library policy.  The Kenosha Public Library reserves the right to further evaluate only those applicants who best meet the needs of the Kenosha Public Library. New employees start at the beginning of the pay range.

EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES IN A SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP

It is contrary to the policy of the Library Board to hire relatives in a supervisory relationship. Relative means any member of the immediate household, or anyone whose relationship by blood or marriage is as close or closer than first cousin, i.e. parent, child, brother, sister, spouse, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandparent, grandchild, first cousin, and step, and in-law relationships.  The Library retains the right to exempt any family member of any employee from the recruitment process if there is the potential for a supervisory relationship
